Patterns
"Rikyu" Brocade
The original cloth which was one of the favorites of Rikyu, a great tea master, is a brocade with plum blossom motifs in yellowish brown which softly melt into a light blue background. This design is a superb one to represent plumblossoms with five dots in yellowish brown and a lineal construction to combine these dots. In view of its wide use today, we introduced a slight change to the texture of the original fabric.
For a color scheme we learnt the way of making and sense of the original, and tried to represent plum-blossoms in various background colors and by the shades which harmonize with these colors.
Ryoka-mon Nishiki(Brocade of Roundels and Diamonds Design)
Circular and cross designs of conventional floral scrolls in yellow were arranged on a purple ground in the original weft-patter ned brocade, which was found on the borders of the screens preserved in Shosoin Repository, Nara Prefecture, decorated with Tang Dynasty, Chinese ideographs formed with birds'feathers. This type of design reveals the characteristics of the flourishing days of the Nara period, the 8th century Japan.
Sarasa Sei-gyu-mon(The Sacred Bull in an Exotic Design)
One of the typical textiles made in India is chintz, or the printed cotton fabric. The design of this brocade, made up of the sacred bulls in the Hindu religion and the ornamental plants, was modeled after the masterpiece of the chintz. The print was processed in the "golden-seal printing technology", i.e. depicting a design with a gold foil or a mica powder pasting onto the fabric with Japanese lacquer or starch.
We have made into warp-patterened brocade, reviving the unique effect of the "golden-seal printing technology" applied to the Indian chintz, with our delicate and elegant weaving technique.
