Interest in Japan: Jonathon has been fascinated by Japan since 1989, with a deep interest in its unique handicrafts, cuisines, and cultural nuances. His connection with the country has been further enriched by his Japanese-Australian friends, who introduced him to the world of Japanese arts and crafts.

A seasoned artist with discerning taste in Japanese artisanal products, Jonathon recently acquired textile placemats for vases from the Tatsumura Online Store. Visiting Japan several times since 1989 and planning a 2025 visit, he now explores online stores like "Musubi Kiln" from home in Melbourne, prioritizing artisanal products of quality, with ties to traditional Japanese art.

- What kind of Japanese artisanal products have captured your interest over the years?

Jonathon: My fascination spans cookware, home decor, stationary, tableware, and artworks, including limited-edition prints from renowned artists like Hokusai through to new and emerging Japanese artists. I'm interested in all aspects of Japanese culture and art. As far back as I can remember, I have always been interested in Japan.

- As a multidisciplinary artist, how has the Japanese approach to art influenced your work?

Jonathon: The Japanese commitment to design, functionality, and quality has significantly influenced both my aesthetic and my creative process. Initially exposed to the arts as a dancer and later as a ballroom dance instructor in Tokyo, I absorbed the passion that the Japanese people have for the arts.

- When considering Japanese artisanal products, what factors influence your purchasing decisions?

Jonathon: Several factors play a role, including the artisan's background, product quality and style, and its relevance to traditional Japanese art forms. Additionally, I value supporting local artists and artisans who contribute to the continuity of these endangered skills.

- You seem to have a long history of appreciation for Japan and its culture. Tell us how you discovered the Tatsumura Online Store.

Jonathon: I came across Tatsumura through an NHK feature on their dying methods, which vividly reminded me of a kimono using Tatsumura textiles that I saw on display in Kyoto in 1989. I was so intrigued by Tatsumura commitment to precisely colour his fibre that I explored the online store and I purchased a range of textile placemats for vases. Some I will use practically for this purpose. Others I will display in hanging frames. I am delighted with the quality and aesthetic of these pieces.

- What kind of Japanese artisanal products are you currently seeking?

Jonathon: As a recent homeowner, I'm actively seeking design pieces, artwork, homeware, tableware, kitchenware, and textiles. I want to infuse my home with unique items for personal enjoyment and to offer guests a distinctive experience. I'm also interested in collaborating with Japanese artisans to create products inspired by existing artworks.
