Description

A summer folding fan that alleviates the summer heat and looks refreshing when used. This fan, crafted by the renowned fan maker Iba-sen, features a thin gauze fabric carefully tailored to a sturdy 25-ken frame.Iba-sen is a long-established shop specializing in folding fans and hand fans, founded in Tenshō 18 (1590) by Ima-ya Kanzaemon, a merchant from Hamamatsu who moved to Edo alongside Tokugawa Ieyasu. At the time of its founding, the company was located in Horie-cho, Nihonbashi, Edo, where it dealt in washi paper and bamboo crafts. From the late Edo period onward, it began handling ukiyo-e prints featuring fans, spreading the name “Iba-sen” as a publisher for artists such as the first Toyokuni, Kuniyoshi, and Hiroshige. These folding fans, which combine the techniques of two long-established Japanese companies, are lightweight yet sturdy, ensuring they will last for many years. They also come with a special fan case made from matching fabric.

[About “Sha” (Gauze)]

Kashuu Nami-mon(Design of Waves in Collection of Poems)

This design is adapted from the collection of poems written by 36 poets which has been kept in Nishi-hongan-ji Temple in Kyoto since the Heian Period (794-1160, A.D.) that is famous of its beautiful calligraphy and sketches depicting waves and streams. We have made SHA weave which is thin and cool fabric, of which patters are effected by patterning wefts which alternates with ground yarn.
