Patterns

Pazyryk-no Uma(A Horse of Pazyryk)

The design of this brocade is modeled after the design of the extant world oldest carpet, considered to have made in the 5th century to the 4th century, B.C., excavated in the permafrost of the Pazyryk burials in the East Altai Mountains, East-Central Asia. In the original design, the horse wears matting instead of saddling, and the knight wears thin pants, boots, and Persian-look headgear. The flower design enclosed by a square pattern is considered to have imitated the Assyrian pattern depicting pinecones and lotus flowers. We have woven this valuable design of the original, certifyingt hat there had been a trade between the Far East and the Near East in the ancient civilization, into warp-patterned brocade in our exquisite weaving technique and idea.

Shika-mon Arisugawa Nishiki(Arisugawa Brocade with Deer Pattern)

The so-called "meibutu-gire" meaning famous textiles were selected by the tea masters to decorate paintings, writing scrolls and utensils for the tea ceremony. During the long period of time extending from the early Muromachi period (1338-1573A.D.) to the late Edo period (1603-1867A.D.), most of the meibutsu-gire were imported to Japan from Asian countries. Whence the name of Arisugawa derives is unknown, but most notable in this brocade are a tactful combination of straight lines, sophisticated color scheme and design, and an orderly, advanced weaving technique required to make it. This original taste is woven into warp-patterned brocade with our weaving technique in new colors.

Tempyō Syuryōmon Nishiki(Tempyō Brocade with a Hunting Scene)

The original brocade from which our textile was reproduced has been handed down in the Shösõ-in in Nara. Its design is a so-called "hunting" pattern in which the "pearled" medallions are surrounded by the "vine arabesques", and within these roundels, four horsemen shooting leoards are represented with flowering trees, running sheep and deer. In a space between the roundels, are arranged lozenges which are skillfully combined with lions and long-tailed birds. Both "hunting" pattern and "pearled" roundel are the peculiar design of Sassanian Persia, and the patterning of this brocade is a most typical one of Sassanian Persia found in the T'ang Dynasty (A.D.618-906). when we eompare this piece with the "hunting scene" brocade kept in the Horyu-ji Temple, the lines are softer and the line up of the design is more complex, and thus we can see the transition of times.
