Patterns

Ryo-kamon nishiki
The original is a beautiful weft brocade with yellow patterns of flowers and arabesques woven in a linear pattern on a purple ground, light and unbroken. The woven pattern has something in common with the pattern of the hira-de pattern of the silver hira-de mirror box and the silver hira-de fangaku mirror box in the Shosoin treasury, which is unique to the Nara period. This brocade is also used as a border fabric for a screen of Chinese characters in the Shosoin Repository.
