Fuku-neko Kohshi-mon(Design of Good-Luck Cat and Cross Stripes Pattern)
This design is composed of the cross stripes pattern diversely developed in the Edo period (1603~1867AD) in the popular culture like the costume of KABUKI play and UKIYO-E (color print), and a cat arched its back which was widely loved by people in the same era.
The cross stripes made of thick and thin lines are called “OKINA-KOHSHI” (a plaid pattern of old man) depicting a grandfather and a grandchild respectively meaning the prosperity of descendants. The cat is a symbol of good fortune as "FUKU-NEKO" (a good-luck cat) as it protects the crop and the treasure from the rat’s biting and gnawing. The cat is also idolized especially by sailors as the guardian deity for the same reason.
We have woven into the warp-patterned brocade with the design of the linear manner of the checks and the soft figure of the good-luck cat.
