Description

"Kimenoki" dolls are crafted by carving grooves into a wooden torso and embedding the edges of fabric strips into them to create the costume. Because the torso is made of wood, the costume retains its shape well, making these dolls easy to display and handle. They are very simple to decorate and store, and—most importantly—their compact size allows them to be displayed even in small spaces. They are also recommended as seasonal décor for entryways and living rooms.

This majestic Kimekomi May doll looks as if it’s about to draw its bow and arrow at any moment. The luxurious Ryumura-zori fabric costume complements its fresh yet dignified face, and the bow and arrow are faithfully rendered down to the finest details.

The hunting robe features the “Gyoshiki Phoenix Pattern Brocade,” while the hakama is made of the “Grape and Arabesque Pattern Brocade,” which exudes luxury with its beautiful shimmer of gold.

We hope that, as you pray for the healthy growth of your children or grandchildren, these dolls from Tatsumura Art Textiles will help create memories that will remain in their young hearts forever.

Dragon Boat Festival" collection of patterns to ward off bad luck

Children's Day in 2026 is scheduled to fall on May 5 (Tuesday). In Japan, it was introduced as one of the five festivals in the Nara and Heian periods, and by the Edo period (1603-1867), it had spread from the samurai to the common people, leading to the culture of carp streamers and warrior dolls. In modern times, it has taken root as an important event for boys, with its original meaning as a celebration to ward off bad luck and pray for good health.
Tatsumura Bijutsu Orimono offers a variety of May dolls and patterns suitable for to convey such feelings. Please take this opportunity to select from a wide variety of well-designed patterns for warding off evil spirits, including traditional scale patterns.

Tempyō Syuryōmon Nishiki(Tempyō Brocade with a Hunting Scene)

The original brocade from which our textile was reproduced has been handed down in the Shösõ-in in Nara. Its design is a so-called "hunting" pattern in which the "pearled" medallions are surrounded by the "vine arabesques", and within these roundels, four horsemen shooting leoards are represented with flowering trees, running sheep and deer. In a space between the roundels, are arranged lozenges which are skillfully combined with lions and long-tailed birds. Both "hunting" pattern and "pearled" roundel are the peculiar design of Sassanian Persia, and the patterning of this brocade is a most typical one of Sassanian Persia found in the T'ang Dynasty (A.D.618-906). when we eompare this piece with the "hunting scene" brocade kept in the Horyu-ji Temple, the lines are softer and the line up of the design is more complex, and thus we can see the transition of times.
