Description

"Kimenoki" dolls are crafted by carving grooves into a wooden torso and embedding the edges of fabric into them to create the costume. Because the torso is made of wood, the costume retains its shape well, making these dolls easy to display and handle. They are very simple to set up and store, and—most importantly—their compact size allows them to be displayed even in small spaces.

This Kimekomi May doll features luxurious Ryumura-style fabric that beautifully complements its fresh yet dignified face. The sleeves are crafted from “Sōun-ji Mon-dai” brocade—a lavishly woven gold-threaded fabric featuring a vine-and-arbor pattern composed of dianthus-style flowers—which lends the doll a sense of grandeur and opulence. The figure’s expression is dignified and graceful, with every detail—from the “saihai” (commander’s staff) held by a general on the battlefield to the “eboshi” (ceremonial cap) and “katana” (sword)—faithfully rendered. With its refined and flawless decoration, this warrior doll stands out as a beautiful and valiant figure.

A collection of exquisite pieces that preserve the beauty of the Japanese spirit within tradition while pursuing a fresh sensibility—these stylish May dolls complement both Japanese-style and Western-style rooms. We hope that, with a doll from Tatsumura Art Textiles, you will create lasting memories that will remain in your child’s or grandchild’s heart forever, as you pray for their healthy growth.

Dragon Boat Festival" collection of patterns to ward off bad luck

Children's Day in 2026 is scheduled to fall on May 5 (Tuesday). In Japan, it was introduced as one of the five festivals in the Nara and Heian periods, and by the Edo period (1603-1867), it had spread from the samurai to the common people, leading to the culture of carp streamers and warrior dolls. In modern times, it has taken root as an important event for boys, with its original meaning as a celebration to ward off bad luck and pray for good health.
Tatsumura Bijutsu Orimono offers a variety of May dolls and patterns suitable for to convey such feelings. Please take this opportunity to select from a wide variety of well-designed patterns for warding off evil spirits, including traditional scale patterns.
