Pattern Description
DRAGON with GRAPEVINES(Warp-patterned Brocade with the Zodiacal Animal)

In China the dragon has traditionlly been regarded as one of the four auspicious and divine animals (the dragon, tortoise, unicorn and phoenix) and the greatest and holiest of all on earth. Especially in the 3rd - 6th centuries it become ciosely connected with the Taoism. As a result, the dragon had became a typical motif of designs in China since then.
The design of this piece is composed of grapevine patterns in a wax-dyed plain-weave silk cloth and a motif of the dragon on an octagonal nickel mirror in ancient Japan.
It is executed as a warp-patterned brocade reflecting the essence of the culture of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) in China.
