Patterns
Asuka Shokko-kin("Shokko" Brocade of the Asuka Period)
The original piece from which our reproduction was adopted is used for the hem and the border of the small banner of the Asuka period known as the oldest standard in Japan and called"Shokko" (meaning "made in Shu, China").This brocade is similar in design to that excavated from the ruins of Turfan, Sinkiang Region, China, and therefore this fabric is said to have been woven in the 7th century.
The design is composed of a lotus flower pattern in the center surrounded by a pearl roundel inside a square. Being richly colored, this textile has an exquisite charm of "Shokko".
We have woven the pattern and the ground into the warp-patterned brocade, same as the original, with our refined weaving technique.
Iaru-no-ushi(The Bull in the I a r u Field)
It was a sincere hope of the ancient Egyptian that they could l ive happily in the next world after death in the same way as in this world. Their wish was common even to the animals, especially to the bulls as they were worshipped as the sacred in the ancient Egyptian religion. The "Field", or the "Field of Reeds", is the heavenly paradise of the next world in the ancient Egyptian mythology, where it is located on the eastern horizon from where the Sun rises. The design idea of this brocade is adopted from a wall painting of the "Field" drawn in the 19th Dynasty of Egypt (12C, BC) and woven into warp-patterned brocade with our exquisite weaving technique.
Ryoka-mon Nishiki(Brocade of Roundels and Diamonds Design)
Circular and cross designs of conventional floral scrolls in yellow were arranged on a purple ground in the original weft-patter ned brocade, which was found on the borders of the screens preserved in Shosoin Repository, Nara Prefecture, decorated with Tang Dynasty, Chinese ideographs formed with birds'feathers. This type of design reveals the characteristics of the flourishing days of the Nara period, the 8th century Japan.
Shikami-mon Chohan-kin(Warp Brocade of Multi-colored Stripes with Lion-mask Pattern)
A front view of a "lion-mask" is patterned on a ground of Chohan (vertical stripes using multi-colors) which was rather primitive for the Nara period Japan (8th century). This design depicts lion lined up horizontally opening the mouth on the vertical stripes colored in red, green , light blue, and purple. While quite stylized, the pattern preserves the ancient Chinese motif of the t'ao t'ieh (ogre mask).
